CHURCHILL NA MADEIRA premieres on RTP
The documentary series Churchill in Madeira, of two episodes, has its premiere scheduled on RTP1 on June 6 and 13, at 11:30pm.
The main thread of this series will be Churchill's preparation for and visit to Madeira, which will include several aspects of his life and the island's history. Winston Churchill, former British prime minister and central figure in the Allies' victory, arrived in Madeira on January 1st, 1950, aboard the ship Durban Castle, which entered Funchal bay at dusk. He was accompany by his wife, his daughter, two secretaries, a literary assistant, the butler, and two bodyguards. The landing is celebrated with fireworks and a warm crowd. He stays at Reid's Palace Hotel, at the invitation of the owners, the English Blandy family, and the English consul in Madeira and his friend, Bryce Nairn. Reid's is one of the most famous hotels in the world and has just reopened after being closed for 10 years due to the war. Churchill comes to spend a two-week vacation on the island, writing his memories and painting.
Written and directed by Joana Pontes, the documentary includes reconstitutions, actual shots and archive footage, as well as important testimonials, such as those of José Pacheco Pereira, Miguel Albuquerque, Eduardo Jesus, Michael Blandy, among others.
Churchill in Madeira premiered on the History Channel on June 18, 2022.
